The Whakatane Truck and Bike Show an event to raise funds for Child Cancer on October 10th is all go according to event organiser James Beattie. The day is set to be fun but organisers are quick to point out the reasons for the event in the first place.
The Eastern Bay of Plenty Child Cancer Foundation is a group that supports families dealing with the fall out of a child being diagnosed, treated or recovering from cancer. Barry Walker former chairman of the EBOP Cancer Foundation says that dealing with cancer can cause incredible stress in a family and in some cases that stress causes marriage break-ups.
Speaking from experience Barry describes how tough things get and how support is needed. ‘Families are often split up while a child is away getting treatment and while that is going on the family still needs an income and the other children need to be supported. I guess life needs to continue. The Child Cancer Foundation does things like provide a Family Support Worker, help
out with a teacher aid for children when they return to school if required, supply food vouchers, extra educational tuition, educational equipment,
travel to treatment if required for the rest of the family. Run family support days, parent evenings, counseling, welfare support, books.
Walker says that at the moment there are four children receiving treatment while four have finished their treatment and there are a number in long term remission.
The Whakatane Truck and Bike Show is an opportunity for the community to get in behind the foundation and event organiser James Beattie says that many have already given generously. Many businesses have contributed to the $5000 raffle which will be drawn on the day. Tickets are on sale at 1XX and also on the day. The Truckers have made the commitment to be here with many coming from all over New Zealand. The trucking companies have been great supplying loads of give-aways like T-shirts and hats. Some of the Truck and Bike owners will be giving rides for a gold coin donation. The event has been sanctioned by Senior Sergeant Bruce Jenkins and will also be supported by the Whakatane Fire Brigade who will have a classic fire engine available for joy rides.
