Message From Our Mayor

Welcome to Whakatane District where living with the sun is a way of life for those of us who are lucky enough to call this slice of paradise our home.

This district has such a lot to offer those who choose to work and live here. Not only is it a magnificent outdoor playground where people can enjoy a wide variety of pursuits but also there are wonderful cultural opportunities with many thriving arts and cultural activities.

As the district grows there are more employment opportunities arising. Agriculture, forestry and wood processing are the main industries but tourism and other service sectors are expanding rapidly. With the ease of communications in today's world, many people are choosing to live and work in places far from busy cities.

The Maori people who make up nearly 50% of this district are proud of their heritage and their language is strong and vibrant. Their history and culture is a source of interest and fascination to visitors to our community and local people are friendly and willing to share.

Whakatane District is the favourite holiday spot of many New Zealanders who come here to enjoy our beaches and harbours; our unspoilt rivers and forests and of course the wonderful sunshine. More and more international visitors are discovering this amazing district with its friendly people and wonderful natural surroundings.

Come and discover a slice of paradise, come and discover Whakatane.
