Summercross

The National Championship Summercross is held at Awakaponga each year, where entrants compete for the Title of the New Zealand Dirt Bike Federation Champions, making it one of the most important meets in New Zealand.  Most of New Zealand's MX elite race to battle for the National Titles and some of Europe's Grand Prix stars make the trip down under to compete in this world-class event. The event also features an invitation race, a classic vintage motocross and demonstration racing from the Suzuki stunt riders. The top manufacturers' teams also enter every year.

Spectators will be well catered for, as the Awakaponga circuit is one of the best MX viewing circuits in the country. It is situated on Braemar Road between SH 30 & SH 2, approx 20 mins from Whakatane and 40 min from Rotorua and Tauranga.

The 2010 Edgecumbe SuperValue Supermarket SUMMERCROSS event is on once again this December 27th - 28th.

After a very successful 2009 Summercross with special guest rider Ben Townley back riding his first major motocross after sitting out part of the 2008 and all of the 2009 American Motocross championship (AMA Series), it was a dream return to the top step of the podium which has lead onto a very successful season in America in 2010.

This year sees another high for the Bay of Plenty Motorcycle Club with news this week that Ben will return to defend his Summercross title along with past Summercross champion & World Championship Motocross contender Josh Coppins.  Last time these two did battle at Summercross was in 2007 and what a show they put on!

The Awakaponga Motocross circuit will see some track changes for this year's event, with the Top Junior Motocross riders competing on Monday the 27th of December, with the Senior riders racing on Tuesday the 28th on that same track layout.  The 27th will also host the Mini Summercross competitors on one of the few natural terrain tracks which always tests the fastest mini riders.

In conjunction with the Senior riders on Tuesday, the club has branched out into V.M.X (Vintage Motocross), with the older Pre '86 motocross bikes utilizing the track the Mini riders use the previous day - so you will see some classic "Old Skool" bikes from several different eras battling for the title of this first ever V.M.X Summercross event!

It's shaping up to be pretty big - with entry forms due out by the end of September, and sponsors jumping on board to be part of SUMMERCROSS 2010.
