The Eastern Bay of Plenty Triathlon and Multisport Club will bring you another fantastic event.

In a dramatic change the 2010 Whakatane Great Outdoors Adventure race will now take place ion the 4th and 5th of December. Race organisers are confident that the date change will be a popular move and allow for more water based activities. Organisers apologise to those who after 8 years have like migrating birds flown to Whakatane every May.

The good news is that Neil Jones will be at the helm scheming and devising the ultimate challenge for the serious adventure racer while providing heaps of thrills and spills for the novice and recreational types.

A good honest 24

Forget about finishing a 24 hour race without tackling a hard day’s night. World champions Orion Health showed their class in winning the Whakatane Great Outdoors 24hr Adventure Race in 19 hrs 15 min (before credits and penalties were tallied), reclaiming the title they lost in 2008. Most of the teams took around the full 24.

From shooting a grade 2 rapid to shooting rifles, the Whakatane adventure race did things a bit differently this year.

You’ve got six hours. So start out with a running and kayaking Rogaine at stunning Lake Tarawera. Finish by riding a lap of a BMX track. Along the way, mix in a leap off a jetty to find an underwater checkpoint, a paddle in a plastic sit-on down a stretch of vigorous white water, and five shots on a rifle range.

The six hour race included a 14km trek and a 25km mountain bike stage. But even those legs included some interesting challenges. Those who didn’t know a manuka from a rimu, or a willow from a wattle must have been scratching their heads looking for some of the checkpoints.
