Brumby races

Unlike most race days, the Brumby Race Day is a chance for all types of horses to stretch their legs round the track. There are 10 novelty races, including ponies, hacks, Clydesdales, Morgan horses, western horses, pintos and a miniature horse sulky race. Sure-footed donkeys also get a chance to show their stuff!

The betting is lottery style and a maximum bet is $0.10 (10 cents) per race. All winning tickets go into the draw to win a sponsor's prize.

It's a fun day out for the whole family, so bring a picnic and enjoy a day in the sun. Clowns and fairies on horses provide entertainment, and food and refreshments are available. People can dress up for the occasion and have some fun with glamorous and colourful hats. Fashion spotters will give prizes for Brumby Race Queen, Brumby Race Teen Queen, Best Hat and Best Couple.

The Brumby Races are held at Te Teko Racecourse, Whakatane. Admission $10 per adult, $5 per child, under $5's free or $25 per carload.

The event is run by the Eastern Bay of Plenty Hunt Club Inc. as their annual fundraiser. A donation is also made to a local charity.
