Mataatua Waka Ama regatta

Sunday April 25th  2010

9.00 am to 4.00 pm

The annual Mataatua Waka Ama Regatta takes place during April on the Whakatane River. Waka Ama are styled after traditional Maori outrigger canoes and the race days are spectacular events. The day starts with the historic Mataatua Waka making its way up the river to the Whakatane Information Centre. The course is a four lane, 300m course which runs down the centre of the river. The only prerequisite to racing is that the teams must have had three training sessions on the river, including safety training prior to the regatta.

The event regularly attracts over 500 participants from around the region, who will compete in a number of categories covering entrants from 10 years old to masters and a number of corporate teams. The event is open to anyone, in the spirit of promoting waka ama for all, and is a wonderful opportunity to share Maori culture with the wider community and to appreciate the history of waka on the river. Food and general stall set up on the day.  Something for everyone.
