Quota Whale of a Swim

The popular Quota 'Whale of a Swim' is an open water event that attracts entrants from all over New Zealand.  The 9.1km course is from Whale Island to the Whakatane River mouth, also known as The Heads. Held for the previous nine years during the summer months, the event continues to grow, with entrants enjoying the unique and spectacular environment and one of few opportunities for an ocean swim.  The event is positioned as a 'personal achievement' rather than a race, and many swimmers come back every year for the challenge. Each swimmer is accompanied by a kayak, and a large number of safety craft along with the coastguard attend the event.

The 2008 event will also include a 4km option.  Swimmers leave the Whakatane Heads, swim to a 2km marker buoy and return to the Heads.   Swimmers will be supervised by kayaks and safety craft.  The new distance is an ideal training event for Taupo Ironman.

Whale of a Swim' is run by the Whakatane Quota Club as a fundraiser for a local community cause.  Entry forms will be available on this site closer to the event.
