Paradise!

Ohiwa Harbour is a haven for many rare and endangered species of birds. The hills above Whakatane are kiwi sanctuaries. There are many projects to restore and protect local environments. Whales, dolphins and Orca are often seen off the coast of Whakatane.

Holidaymakers

Whakatane welcomes around 50,000 holidaymakers over the summer months.

Movie time!

Opotiki is just 45 minutes’ drive from Whakatane. Check out the town's historic De Luxe Theatre and Shalfoon & Francis stores, which have been restored to their early-20th century grandeur. More: www.opotikinz.com

Ka-boom!

Whakaari (White Island) erupted as recently as 2001. Boulders the size of cars were tossed around the volcano crater.

No crowds!

The population of Whakatane/Ohope is 17,000. Around 32,000 people live across the wider district.
