Endurance Sport Update

OCTOBER

Spring brings better weather, longer daylight and more incentive to get outdoors. It’s time to think about which events you may like to do. The Eastern Bay of Plenty certainly has a lot to choose from. The best place to look up events in the Whakatane, Kawerau and Opotiki districts is www.whakatane.com or www.opotikinz.com

Congratulations to all those who took on the Motu Challenge and the Scott 160 in such challenging conditions. Special mention must be made of those who opted for the alternative swim section - Neil Jones and Barry Cutfield in particular.

NEW EVENTS

If you are looking for a new challenge then try one of these new events:

Rangitaiki River Festival March 27th

Plans are underway to make this a fantastic event. Organisers want to make this Oceania’s biggest paddle event. 2010 will include a paddle marathon for single Waka Ama and Kayaks starting at Te Mahoe and finishing at Thornton. Relay options will be available as will shorter races for the 6 man Waka and recreational kayaks. Organisers are working on securing substantial sponsorship which may result in a prize pool unmatched in New Zealand.
The event is not just about prizes and paddling but fun and a festival of a wild food variety is being planned for the finish line at Thornton.

Fitness Fusion Ohope Half Marathon April 4th

Ohope has been crying out for a half marathon and Paul Charteris of Tarawera Ultramarathon fame has teamed up with Fitness Fusion to bring you something to aim for at the end of summer. A brilliant build up for the Rotorua Marathon!
The Fitness Fusion Ohope Half Marathon Run also features a 10k fun run/walk and 3k doggie dash. A fun, flat and fast course with coastal views and guaranteed canine mayhem.

Feature Events

Whirinaki Quest November 7th

Now in its second year the Quest looks like it will become even more of a challenge. Race organiser Nic Reader has enlisted the help of former NZ Downhill Champ John Kirkcaldie. John has insisted on including a better downhill – sounds good doesn’t it. But the bad thing is there will be an extra climb for the long course! I thought it was tough enough – test yourself on this new 40km course or take on the recreational 20km ride.
Cabin Leishman has signed up which means last years winner JP Tobin of windsurfing fame will have his work cut out if he wants to claim back to back titles. Check out www.epicevents.co.nz for more details.

Rotorua to Ohope Fun Ride November 14th

Are you a cyclist? Do you ride for enjoyment? Are you riding the Round Lake Taupo Fun ride on the 28th November? If you can answer yes to all three then Cycling Rotorua have the event for you. It’s their annual 100km Rotorua to Ohope Fun Ride on Sunday 15th November.  Start time for the above is at 0900 sharp starting from the BMX car park on Te Ngae Road with registration from 0730-0830 and race briefing at 0845. For those riders unsure of whether they can handle the whole 100km distance there is a 50/50 relay with the change over at the far end of Lake Rotoma at the base of the Rotoma hills.  For more information www.cyclingrotorua.co.nz

Happy days,

Mike van der Boom
