The western end of Ōhope Beach - commonly just called West End - is the most popular part of the beach.

Ōhiwa Harbour is one of the natural jewels of the region. Explore its islands by kayak or yacht, or spend a day jet skiing, water skiing or sail boarding. It’s also a safe swimming spot for children. The surrounding hills are dotted with pā sites, including Tauwhare Pā near the turnoff to Ōpōtiki. Ōhiwa is a haven for bird life; godwits migrate from Alaska every season to nest on its shores.

This path for cyclists and walkers alike is a gentle amble for all ages and abilities along the shoreline of one of NZ’s most unspoiled estuaries, Ōhiwa Harbour. 

If you're keen for a simple family spin, go to Maraetotara in Ōhope. Ride up the unsealed Maraetotara Road into the bush-edged Burma Rd to the main Ōhope-Whakatāne highway.

Learn of the district's history and enjoy brilliant views of Ohakana Island, Port Ōhope and the East Cape.
