The official winner for 2008 is under a cloud as NIWA investigate why Whakatane has recorded such a high total!  Here's the statistics.

It's something that all Whakatane residents have know for years Whakatane is the New Zealand's Sunshine Capital!

Whakatane outshines all other centres!

Spring has been drier and sunnier than usual.

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research's latest figures show rainfall was 75% below normal in parts of Northland, Auckland, the Coromandel and much of the South Island.

The agency says recent weather patterns are consistent with El Nino conditions.

It says El Nino could persist through summer, meaning lower than normal rainfall, with potential for drought in some areas.

Whakatane recorded the highest spring temperature with 32.1 degrees celsius, while Hanmer Forest recorded the lowest temperature of minus 7.2 degrees.

In the main centres, Wellington was the wettest, Dunedin the driest and Christchurch the sunniest and coolest.
