RESULTS SO FAR

After two events the order has changed with Husband and Wife Andrew and Sue Ross now in the lead. Andrew looks quite secure in his lead but Sue is only 4 minutes ahead of Nikita Watkins.

Iron-athletes are now busily preparing themselves for the Multisport Challenge on June 14th, when Monty's Revenge could well shuffle the places again. Remember the series is not all about racing but completing all 5 events. There are only 5 potential IRON DUDES and 9 IRON CHICKS. Who will be left standing after Toi's challenge in November?

BACKGROUND

This club began in the 1980s as a Triathlon Club.  During the 1990s it expanded its role to include multi-sport athletes and cater for both on-road and off-road events.

The Club holds regular monthly triathlons and duathlons on the first Sunday of every month.  These are short distances and cater for a range of athletes, ranging from the seriously fit individuals through to young children, and are popular with adults who are giving it a ‘go’ for the first time.  The venue is opposite the Ohope Golf Club, at the end of the Ohiwa spit.  The race entry fee is minimal, with free entry for club members.  The annual club subscription is only $20.

The Club is now well known for three major events each year:

Whakatane Great Outdoors Monty’s Revenge multisport event is a day of adventure on one of the most scenic courses in New Zealand taking in seascapes, cliff, bush and river vistas. Monty’s Revenge is an achievable 57km course that includes run mountain bike and kayak sections and is open to individuals and teams. The event is held in June. More info here.

The Ohope Sprint Triathlon is a 750 m swim + 20 km road bike + 5 km run, usually held in February. This event also doubles as the Bay of Plenty Schools Championships.

Whakatane Great Outdoors 24 Hour Adventure Race –  2008 sees the first ever SOLO category in adventure racing! Teams from around New Zealand compete in a grueling and challenging race covering over 100km of rugged bush and water ways around the Eastern Bay. This event takes place on the second weekend of May each year. More info here

The Club also presents other events, including a Business House Triathlon and Duathlon, women-only triathlons and training, regular kayak races over the winter, combines with the Surf Club to run a surf swim/beach run event in the summer, and has hosted events such as the annual Police Triathlon.

Some members have represented New Zealand in international events.  Most participate in both club events and those hosted by other clubs, e.g., Bayfair Triathlon (Mt Maunganui), Blue Lake Triathlon (Rotorua), etc, with the more hardy souls completing the Half Ironman in Tauranga, and, for one or two, the actual Ironmen events.  However, the bulk of our members are of average ability and simply enjoy the friendly atmosphere, regardless of how well or how badly they perform.

Non-members are more than welcome to pitch up.
