Whakatane enjoys a temperate climate and records some of New Zealand's highest sunshine hours.   Whakatane was New Zealand's Sunshine Capital in 2010, the North Island's Sunniest Place in 2011 and is currently running second in the hotly contested sunshine race for 2012.  With over 700 hours recorded to March 31st, Tekapo is ahead with an extra 38 hours, while Nelson and Blenheim trail behind Whakatane.

The district has moderate temperatures year round, with summer temperatures between 25°C and 28°C, and winter seldom falling below 11°C. Whakatane records the highest temperature in New Zealand about 55 days of each year.
