Meet the Whakatāne isite Visitor Information Centre team

MEET THE TEAM - Kristen Davies, isite and Events Officer

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role?
I am Wellington, born and raised and have just moved to sunny Whakatāne 🌞 with my partner who has returned home after five years away.

I have recently completed by Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Tourism Management and have spent the last year working for a large hotel. I have a huge passion for all things events and tourism and am very excited to start my career with the Whakatāne District Council. This role provides support across both the isite and Events teams.

What do you love most about the Whakatāne District?
The thing I love most about the Whakatāne District is the beautiful natural environment and the small-town community feel 🤝.

What's your top tip for visitors to our rohe?
My top tip for visitors to our rohe is come and see our lovely isite team, they are full of the best knowledge, and it is the perfect way to make the most of your time.

🌊 I always recommend people visit Ōtarawairere Bay as it is a breath-taking hidden gem and my favourite place in the bay.

Whakatāne has a busy shopping precinct with a vast range of delectable cafes and restaurants, boutique fashion and homeware stores, bookshops, several sporting and recreation outlets and more.

Otarawairere is the hidden jewel of the Whakatāne-Ōhope area. This secluded beach is accessible only on foot or by kayak, but the trip is definitely worth the effort.

MEET THE TEAM - Gemma Eastwood, isite Team Leader

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role?
I am originally from Scotland, born and raised in Edinburgh. I worked for many years for the Scottish Government and moved to Whakatāne 11 years ago with my partner who was born and raised here, and our children.

What do you love most about the Whakatāne District?
I love the people in Whakatāne, I also love the strong local community. The weather is great and the scenery is gorgeous.

What's your top tip for visitors to our region?
Definitely walking our local trails, there are so many beautiful sights, birds and bush.

The Whakatāne District is renowned for its superb walking and tramping tracks. We have both coastal tracks with incredible ocean vistas and awe-inspiring walkways through ancient native forests.

Nga Tapuwae o Toi, or the ‘Footprints of Toi’, is a walking trail that captures the essence of the Whakatāne District.

MEET THE TEAM - David, Visitor Information Officer

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role?

Originally from Scotland and despite living in NZ for nearly 20 years I still can’t perfect a kiwi accent!
I love meeting travellers from all over the world, hearing their stories and helping them experience our little bit of paradise. It’s also great to provide a service to our local community, be it travel bookings or helping them plan visits to other regions in NZ.

What do you love most about the Whakatāne District?
It’s a Goldilocks district; not too big and not too small. Everything you could want is here and readily accessible, and we have the best weather in the country!

What's your top tip for visitors to our rohe?
Come and visit us at the isite for our local knowledge and hidden gems. We can help you get the best out of your trip depending on whether you want to do some activities, soak up the culture or explore some of our fantastic walks and cycleways.

Our district is an adventure playground for the whole family. From the magnificent Ōhope Beach to children's playgrounds, walking tracks and fun activities, there's something for everyone to enjoy.
