Awakeri Rail Adventures

Travel along a piece of New Zealand's rich rail history and experience the natural beauty and adventure from the comfort of a rail-cart, cleverly adapted to be self-driven along the rail tracks. Your adventure starts from Awakeri, travelling at a leisurely 20 kilometres per hour with family and friends along a piece of historic railway line. There are four bridges, numerous cuttings and bush scenes along the track.

Awakeri Rail Adventures offers four types of trips:

  • Express Run
    Drive over 20km of track, with one-stop enroute. The Express Run takes around 2 hours.
  • Bush Walk / Snack Run
    Drive to a unique native bush setting and enjoy a guided bush walk, stop for a relaxing track side snack and other activities continue on and explore the full 20km of track. This trip will take around 2.5 hours.
  • Bush Walk Run
    Travel 12km of track and enjoy a guided bush walk - This trip will take around 1.5 hours.
  • Chicken Run
    Ideal for the young ones, you'll travel 8 km of track and help feed the chickens and other birds

Summer / Daylight Saving hours (October - March):

  • Open 8 am to 5:30 pm
  • Express Run: 8 am - 10:30 am
  • Bush Walk & Snack Run: 10:30 am - 2pm and 2 pm - 5:30pm

Winter / Standard time hours (April - September):

  • Open 9 am to 4 pm
  • Bush Walk & Snack Run: 9am - 12:30pm and 12:30pm - 4pm

Wairaka Centennial Park, sits alongside the Whakatāne River at The Heads. The park is a fantastic, family-friendly recreation destination.

Te Papaka pa is rich in Ngāti Awa history. From the summit, a magnificent panorama landward and seaward avails. Nowadays the site is no longer inhabited but is open to sightseers.  

A popular spot known to locals as 'The Heads' where the Whakatāne River meets the sea.

This picturesque, well-groomed 18-hole course is on flat, easy walking land and is adjacent to the Tarawera River with mountain views and bird life adding to the enjoyment for players.
