Whakatāne Hospital

Whakatāne Hospital is a public hospital that provides a high standard of core health services to the people of the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The hospital has 160 beds and over 800 staff. Care spans medical, surgical, pediatric, maternity, obstetric/gynecological and mental health, as well as a wide range of associated clinical support and allied health services. The Project Hope Cancer Centre provides an excellent oncology base for the region.


Health care professionals

General Practitioners in the Eastern Bay of Plenty often operate out of health clinics. These clinics can also include health care professionals such as dentists, physiotherapists, podiatrists and independent midwives.  

Dental and alternative health care such as acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic and kinesiology services are also available.

GP visits for children are free, and visits for adults are subsidized. Dental care is also available free for children through to secondary school age.


Disability support

The area has excellent support for people with disabilities, including the Disabilities Resource Centre and Pou Whakaaro.
