Retire Here

The Bay of Plenty’s warm, sunny climate and proximity to main centres makes the region NZ’s most popular retirement destination. In the east, the Whakatāne District offers the twin attractions of superb climate and affordable property, with a number of apartment buildings and new subdivisions and plenty of lifestyle options for nature or culture lovers. Golf, fishing, walking on the beach and cycling the riverside or coastal paths are popular pastimes, while arts and culture activities and events provide plenty of entertainment for evenings and weekends.

Whakatāne has a charming town centre, nestled between a scenic riverside walkway and spectacular, bush-clad cliffs. In its busy shopping precinct, numerous boutiques and specialty stores line an attractive, tree-lined main street studded with cafes and restaurants. Nearby Ōhope has a great gallery and boutique shops, along with plenty of places to stop for a bite to eat. Most of the town’s national chain stores are located at ‘The Hub’ shopping centre on the outskirts of Whakatāne township.
