Education
In Aotearoa, school is compulsory for children aged 6 to 16, though most start at 5 and often stay beyond 16.
- Primary School: Years 1 to 6 (ages 5 to 10)
- Intermediate School: Years 7 and 8 (ages 10 to 13) — sometimes part of primary schools or secondary schools/colleges
- Secondary School: Years 9 to 13 (ages 13 to 17+)
Education in state (public) schools is free, though parents may be asked for a voluntary donation. Private and boarding schools charge fees.
Home Education
Parents can choose to teach their children at home. Home schooling must meet New Zealand’s education standards and requires approval from the Ministry of Education.
