The Whakatāne District offers a variety of health services to meet the needs of its community. There are also services focused on mental health, chronic conditions, and support for people with disabilities, ensuring everyone can access the care they need close to home.
Whakatāne Hospital
Whakatāne Hospital is the main public hospital serving the Eastern Bay of Plenty community. With 160 beds and over 800 staff, it offers comprehensive care across many areas, including medical, surgical, paediatric, maternity, obstetrics/gynaecology, and mental health services. The hospital also provides a wide range of allied health and clinical support services. Eastern Bay Primary Health Alliance (EBPHA)
EBPHA is the local Primary Health Organisation (PHO) dedicated to supporting general practices and health professionals in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. They focus on improving health outcomes for whānau across the region, with an emphasis on Māori and high-needs communities. EBPHA works with nine general practices serving over 29,000 people, helping to address major health issues such as mental health, immunisations, diabetes and heart disease. Te Puna Ora o Mataatua (TPOOM)
Te Puna Ora o Mataatua is a non-profit organisation based in Whakatāne that provides integrated health, medical, social, and employment services across the Mataatua and Eastern Bay of Plenty region. Their whānau ora approach means they focus on the wellbeing of the entire family, offering holistic care through multiple forms of engagement. Disability support
