Aquaculture
The Eastern Bay is becoming a major hub for sustainable marine farming, especially mussels. In 2023, aquaculture contributed approximately $45 million to the local economy and employed over 300 people across harvesting, processing, logistics and marine services (Infometrics, 2024). A large offshore mussel farm near Ōpōtiki, alongside a modern processing facility and upgraded harbour, is creating hundreds of stable jobs, with employment in the sector growing by 12% since 2018 (Census, 2023).
There are opportunities in harvesting, processing, logistics, marine services and environmental management. Supported by strong government and iwi partnerships, aquaculture in the Eastern Bay is poised for long-term growth, offering meaningful work connected to the ocean.
