Whakatāne is undoubtedly one of New Zealand's best fishing destinations. With crystal-clear waters, easily navigable bar and plenty of fine weather, a fishing trip should definitely be on your agenda. From December through late April, try your luck catching yellow fin, skipjack, albacore tuna, shark and marlin. Year-round fish include snapper, tarakihi, kingfish and many more. Several fishing tournaments are held throughout the year. Whether it is game fishing or trout fishing, you have a number of arenas in which to prove your skills with a rod and reel.

Trout Fishing

In the southern part of the district, the rivers and streams of Te Urewera teem with large brown and rainbow trout - fly fishing or spinning opportunities abound. Take a guide to help you find the best spots.

Surfcasting

For land-based ocean fishing, Matatā and Thornton beaches are well-known for surfcasting. 

Otarawairere is the hidden jewel of the Whakatāne-Ōhope area. This secluded beach is accessible only on foot or by kayak, but the trip is definitely worth the effort.

Ohiwa Harbour, the southern half of Ōhope, offers plenty of opportunities for sightseeing, walks, fishing, kayaking, and more.
