Paddle out through the waves to Ōtarawairere Beach, a stunning spot, with craggy rocky outcrops pushing out into the sea.

The sparkling blue waters of Lake Matahina offers excellent family kayaking and is an ideal spot for training.

Nga Tapuwae o Toi, or the ‘Footprints of Toi’, is a walking trail that captures the essence of the Whakatāne District.

Walk over rolling farmland which leads up to native bush and a trig station. There you can enjoy superb views over the Rangitāiki Plains.

A great spot for safe paddling, whether that's aboard plastic sit-ons, sea kayaks, multisport racers or tractor tyres.

Meandering over Ōpōtiki’s dunes and beach, it's just as good for walking and running as it is for biking. With no hills above 15 metres, and plenty of places to access the sand, children love it!

If you're keen for a simple family spin, go to Maraetotara in Ōhope. Ride up the unsealed Maraetotara Road into the bush-edged Burma Rd to the main Ōhope-Whakatāne highway.

Twist down a bush-clad valley south of Ōpōtiki. The river’s a treasure, with plenty of fun grade 1 and 2 paddling and awesome wilderness scenery.
