The quiet seaside town of Matatā boasts some of the best long sandy beaches in the world.

Seasoned pros, passionate paddlers and keen beginners have a plethora of surf spots to choose from in the Whakatāne area. 

Otarawairere is the hidden jewel of the Whakatāne-Ōhope area. This secluded beach is accessible only on foot or by kayak, but the trip is definitely worth the effort.
