Sports

You’ll be able to follow your passion for pretty much any sport you choose when you live here. Whakatāne has a covered aquatic centre, grass athletic track, hockey stadium, netball, bowls and croquet facilities, tennis and squash courts, and numerous round and oval ball fields.

Rugby union and rugby league are popular, with clubs and grounds all over the region. Women’s rugby union enjoys a healthy following. Whakatāne hosts one of the country’s most popular sevens competitions, and the region’s representative union team, the Steamers, are regular visitors.

Netball is also well followed, with excellent facilities throughout the region. Whakatāne has a major complex of courts. Soccer is popular in Whakatāne, with a number of clubs and a strong youth element. 

Kayaking, rowing and surf lifesaving are all popular, and the district has produced Olympic and world champions in all. Multisport, triathlon, adventure racing and harriers are also strong, with popular clubs and racing for all ages and levels.

There are a number of golf clubs, including two of the country’s best links courses, located in beautiful coastal surroundings.

Seasoned pros, passionate paddlers and keen beginners have a plethora of surf spots to choose from in the Whakatāne area.

Few places can rival Whakatāne for lifestyle. The climate here is superb. Outdoor activities play a large part in many people’s lives, and there are strong clubs and a wide range of sports facilities. 

From the safe white sand beach of Ōhope, with surfing at West End, to the secluded beach of Ōtarawairere, the district is a beach lover’s paradise. 

Whakatāne has a very active arts and culture scene. This forms an important part of the identity and community strength of the district.
