Robin and Laura from Backpacker Guide NZ are on a mission – to create the best travel guide of New Zealand. They’re on a 12 month road trip around the Country and no guide to NZ would be complete without stopping in the Eastern Bay of Plenty!
Days 280 to 282 saw the duo stop in Ōpōtiki where they checked out the museum, the Waioeka River by canoe, and biked along the Dunes Trail with the Mōtū Trails team.
Their next stop for days 283 to 285 was our very own beautiful District! They explored Ōhope’s Ōhiwa harbour by Kayak with KG Kayaks – paddling through mangrove forests and under ancient Pohutukawa trees. This adventure was followed by a night walk through the Ōhope Scenic Reserve to discover the local wildlife and hear the call of wild Kiwi with the Whakatāne Kiwi Trust team.
Their second day in town was spent relaxing in the warm waters of the Awakeri Hot Springs and wandering around the White Pine Bush Scenic Reserve listening to birdsong.
They had an unforgettable day three (285 of their epic road-trip) – a visit to White Island / Whakaari. But that's enough from us, head over to their website and read their awesome blog posts about their stay in the Eastern Bay!
