Forestry and Wood Processing

The Eastern Bay of Plenty region is home to several important export industries. The largest is pulp and paper manufacturing.

A third of the region is planted in exotic forests, mainly radiata pine. Most of the harvest is exported as logs through the Port of Tauranga. Sawmilling and pulp/paper/paperboard manufacturing offer abundant opportunities for manual and skilled workers. The range of employment is vast, from forestry workers, machine operators and mechanical engineers, to human resource specialists, bio-technicians, and health and safety officers.

The Whakatane Mill Limited board manufacturing mill has a workforce of over 100. In Kawerau, Oji Fibre Solutions Tasman Mill was first established in 1953 and with more than 250 employees, it is currently one of the largest employers in the Eastern Bay of Plenty

In Te Teko, Scion is a Crown Research Institute (CRI) specialising in research, science and technology development for forestry, wood and related sectors.

People don’t just come here for the sensational lifestyle - Whakatāne also offers diverse work opportunities.
