Tourism

Backed by the wonderful climate, Whakatāne’s spectacular inland and coastal attractions have encouraged tourism growth.

Tourism marketing activities have further lifted visitor numbers. Tourism now contributes over $100 million to the district’s economy, and 10% of the workforce is employed in tourism and associated businesses. Tourism is the fastest-growing local industry and presents many opportunities.

The former timber town of Murupara boasts some of the best trout fishing rivers in the North Island. Te Urewera, home of the Tuhoe people, and the magnificent Whirinaki Forest provide superb tramping, mountain biking, camping, hunting and horse trekking.

National Geographic Travel's cultural explorers, Heather Greenwood Davis (writer), Erika Larsen (photographer) and Christoph Niemann (Illustrator) visited Whakatāne to explore our diverse region.

People don’t just come here for the sensational lifestyle - Whakatāne also offers diverse work opportunities.
